ABI/INFORM
- Provides access to
articles from over 1,000 business publications worldwide.
- Many of the articles
are available full-text.
- Coverage includes
trade and professional periodicals, as well as a good selection of scholarly
& research journals.
- Has some company information,
but this is not its main strength.
Business and Company Resource Center
- Excellent source of information about individual companies.
- Best source from
the Library for full-text investment company reports about the company
you’re researching.
- Other information provided for most companies includes:
- Company Profile
- Company Financials
- Company History
- News/Articles about the Company
- Company Products
- Company Rankings
- Information about the Industry to which the Company belongs
- Suits & Claims involving the Company
- Trade Associations related to the Company
- Can be searched for information on industries -- either by
description (e.g., “book publishing”) or by SIC/NAICS number (e.g.,
2731/511130) -- although coverage here is not as strong as for individual
companies (at least currently).
- Can also be searched for articles on other business topics.
- Most articles are available full-text.
Business Source Premier
- Provides full text for nearly 7,800 scholarly business journals
and other sources, including full text for over 1,100 peer-reviewed
business publications.
- Includes detailed company profiles for the world's 10,000 largest
companies from sources such as the Plunkett's Manuals and Datamonitor.
- Includes SWOT analyses for many companies.
- Includes country economic reports from the EIU, Global Insight,
ICON Group and CountryWatch.
Factiva
- Excellent starting point for current business news & company
information.
- Provides detailed financial data and company information (including
descriptions and company histories) on publicly-held companies available
on U.S. stock exchanges.
- Includes full text articles from hundreds of sources (investment
magazines; trade and industry journals; newspapers; wire services, etc.).
- Offers direct links to 10-K reports & other SEC filings.
General Business File
- Most information available in GBF is also available
in Business and Company Resource Center (see above) – including
investment company research reports.
- GBF allows searches to be limited to articles available
in full-text and/or in refereed (i.e., scholarly) journals. BCRC
is not currently able to do either.
- General Business File is at present a better choice for
looking for articles on a general business topic, or articles about
industries; Business & Company Resource Center is a better
starting point for researching a specific company.
Hoovers
- Provides financial and other data on over 40,000 public and private
corporations.
- Entries for individual companies include:
- A fact sheet (with basic directory information)
- Company overview
- Company history
- Major officers & employees of the company (including name;
title; age; and, for top execs, salary & bonus)
- Major products & operations (lines of business, brands, divisions,
# of stores/locations, etc.)
- Competitors
- Financial data (balance sheet & incomes statement information
for most recent 3 years, when available)
LEXIS/NEXIS Academic Universe
- Excellent source for information about public & private
U.S. companies, and major international companies.
- Excellent source for full-text articles from magazine, trade
journals, newspapers, wire services, and transcripts of selected broadcast
programs.
- Comprised of five sections, or libraries (not all of which are
business-oriented):
- News
- Business
- Legal Research
- Medical
- Reference
- The Business Library is subdivided further, into:
- Business News> (articles)
- Company Financials (financial & directory information
of U.S. public companies, U.S. private firms, & international
companies)
- Compare Companies (identify companies that meet
a variety of criteria)
- SEC Filings and Reports (Annual Reports, 10Ks, 10Qs,
proxy statements, etc.)
- Industry & Market (articles from the trade journal
literature for 25 industries)
- Accounting (accounting journals & literature)
- Directories (trade show information, etc.)
- Business-related articles are available both in the Business
News part of the Business Library, and in the General News part of the
News Library.
Mergent Online
- Provides
online access to the data once available only in the printed Moody’s
Manuals.
- Includes basic company
information and in-depth financial data on publicly-traded corporations
-- both for the most recent year & for the previous 10-15 years.
- Includes pre-calculated
financial ratios for companies.
- Offers direct access
to SEC filings on the EDGAR system.
STAT-USA
- A service of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
- Provides authoritative information from the federal government
about the U.S. economy; import/export data & foreign trade statistics;
and background information about foreign countries and trade opportunities
worldwide for U.S. businesses.
- Divided into two main parts:
- State of the Nation -- provides current and historic
economic data and statistics for the U.S.
- Globus & NTDB (National Trade Data Bank)-- provides
international trade statistics, information on international marketing
opportunities for U.S business, and background information about
other countries.
CountryWatch
- Offers news and analysis of political, economic, business and environmental
trends on countries of the world.
- Also includes statistical database with data series for 192 countries on topics such as:
- Standard of Living
- Life Expectancy
- Employment
- GDP
- Trade Balance
- Provides 5-year macroeconomic
forecasts for the 192 countries being covered by CountryWatch.
- Has a variety of
maps -- thematic (e.g., crops, green house gases, country risk) or
physical (e.g., Mid-East, Balkan region, Time Zones)
