Library Special Collections
The University Library's Special Collections department was established in the early 1970s by the founding director of the University Library, Floyd
R. Erickson.
In the formative years of the CSUEB Library, Erickson,
an ardent bookman, purchased many private book collections to build
the new library's collection of out of print and older material.
Within these collections were found rare, old and unusual materials
which formed the nucleus of Special Collections.
Over the years,
the collection has grown from donations and library purchases, with
current collection development emphasizing the illustrated book,
fine press editions, and artists' books.
Located on the Upper Mall of the library adjacent to the administrative
office, Special Collections is open for supervised use and study
by the university and general community by appointment only. Due
to the unusual nature of the materials, they are non-circulating
and users are subject to special restrictions governing the use
of these collections.
