Life on the Ranch
Both Men and Women Were Busy From Morning Until Night, and Their Responsibilities Dovetailed
Work on the farm was hard for both men and women. Cooking was done on the old wood stove, and, for many years, water for dishwashing and baths had to be heated on the stove as well. Emilie baked all the bread in great, oven-sized, black pans, that held four loaves at one time, with homemade jam and butter.
Women did most of the sewing, but annually they had a dressmaker come to the ranch to make dresses and shirts.
The boys and men had to supply the demanding jaws of the wood stove. They claimed that the cords and cords of oak - and later gum - they cut, would reach from here to New York .
