Leaving The Old Country, Arriving in the New

The Jensen Brothers Come to California

In the fall of 1871 - after the Jensen brothers were established on their new property -  Erich returned to the island of Fohr to visit his family and to find a wife. He discovered that his father had just died, so he convinced his mother to bring the entire family to live on his ranch in California.

As a result, in 1872, Erich sold his mother's property, and married Christiane Heinsen. By this time, the American Transcontinental Railroad had been built (1869), so they were able to cross the American continent by train.

In all, Erich brought about 20 or more people from Fohr, including relatives and friends.

Very early painting of the original ranch house, in the Castro Valley Hills - built by Jens Jensen, about 1872. This structure still stands today, and is home to the third and fourth generations of the immigrant Jensens

A view of the same ranch house about 1910. The barn and bunkhouse can be seen on the right, and a side view of the ranch house can be seen in the left of the picture
