eBooks

What is an eBook?

An eBook is an electronic version of a printed book. The entire book is searchable—the table of contents, text, footnotes, appendices, and bibliography—and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What eBooks are available?

CSUEB students, faculty, and staff can access several shared collections of eBooks through a joint CSU procurement.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) History eBook Collection Access to over 500 titles covering American, European, Middle Eastern history from ancient times to the present. Also covers the history of technology and includes book reviews.

Netlibrary—Access to over 4400 scholarly, academic, trade, and professional books for CSU users. Subject areas include business, computer science, economics, education, information technology, psychology, the sciences (environment, nursing, medicine/allied health), and the social sciences. There is also a collection of more than 3500 public domain books which include classic works of literature, as well as other titles.

How Do I Find an eBook?

eBooks can be searched in HAYSTAC by author, title, subject, and (key)word. The designation (computer file) after the title, indicates that the format is an eBook.

To see all ACLS eBooks, search directly on the ACLS website, and click on the Browse link; or (available end of September) search "American Council of Learned Societies" as an author on HAYSTAC. Titles will display alphabetically. Click on the web link to connect to the eBook online.

To see all of the NetLibrary eBooks, you may enter “NetLibrary” as an author in HAYSTAC. The titles will be displayed alphabetically. By clicking on the web link, you will be taken directly to the eBook site. Be aware that you must register to obtain “check out” privileges.

How Do I Access an eBook?

Netlibrary eBooks may be “browsed” (borrowed for a short period of time). After 15 minutes of inactivity, the book will be returned to the "virtual bookshelf."

To Browse an eBook in NetLibrary:

  • Locate the eBook in HAYSTAC.
  • Click on the link which reads, "an electronic book accessible through the World Wide Web; click for information."
  • Click on the "Browse this eBook online" link.

NetLibrary’s technology ensures that only one person can use one eBook copy at a time.  The Search tab in the NetLibrary Online eBook Reader allows you to search for any word or phrase within the eBook you are viewing.

How Do I Search Within an eBook?

TheSearch link on ACLS allows searching by word or phrase in the text of all ACLS eBooks.

The Search tab in the NetLibrary Online eBook Reader allows you to search for any word or phrase within the eBook you are viewing. Within the NetLibrary, you may also click on the “Dictionary” to gain a definition of a word.

How Do I Print or Copy?

You may print or copy one page at a time by using your web browser’s Print or Copy functions. Be aware that printing or copying an entire eBook violates copyright law.

How Do I Cite an eBook?

To cite the entire text in the eBook, you may follow this format (APA):

Author. (Date--indicate "No date" if none is known).
"Title of Book" (Edition or other available information).
[Publication medium]. Producer (optional). <http://URL of the eBook> [Access date].

Example:

Strunk, W., Jr. (1918). The elements of style. [Online].
<http://www.columbia.edu/acis/bartleby/strunk/strunk/html#11>
[1998, Aug. 20].

What Are Some of the Advantages of eBooks?

With an eBook, you may:

  • Reformat the text for easier reading (e.g., zoom in on a section of text, or choose an alternate font or size of type).
  • Gain access to a word in a sentence, paragraph, page, chapter, or back-of-the-book index..
  • Look up the definition of any word in the online dictionary.
  • Access the eBook at home or at a distant learning site.
