Reserve Guidelines for
Cal State East Bay -
Electronic, Print, and Media
Please Plan Ahead
Regardless of format, the library observes all fair use guidelines (print, multimedia,
distance learning, etc.) and places items on reserve based on the Copyright
Act of 1976, Chapter 1, Section 108 and other laws and documents (see "The Law" section of these copyright pages). The official policy of California State University, East Bay, approved in 1995 by the Senate and by the President, can be found on the web site of the Office of Academic Affairs.
For additional help, see also Using Electronic Reserves: Guidelines
and Best Practices for Copyright Compliance from the Copyright Clearance Center.
Electronic Reserves in BlackBoard
Your own notes, syllabi, test samples, solutions
- place a direct link in BlackBoard
Full Text Articles from Library Databases
- Library subscriptions include copyright access for our faculty, students, and staff
- Remember that print articles may also be available
in electronic form. See your liaison if you need help in finding
possible electronic equivalents.
- You can try placing a direct link in BlackBoard to the article in the library database; however TEST this from OFF-campus before you commit to that route. If it doesn't work, follow these procedures:
- Find the online article in full text
- Give students the exact full citation in BlackBoard and your source database
- Direct students to that database to search on the article title or author
Book chapters and Single Articles from Journals
- Bring or send a single chapter or article to
the Reserve Desk with full bibliographic information and the number of students you expect in your class
- The library will help to seek copyright permissions and let you know the cost for items where permission is granted. You may need to find funding.
- Once copyright is resolved, the library will mount the items in our electronic reserve system for students to e-access through BlackBoard
Print Reserves in Media Resources and Reserves (Upper Mall of Library)
- library books from our shelves
- your own instructor copies
- single book chapter where copyright permission is not granted for digitizing
Bring the copy or copies (no more than 1 copy per 10 students)
- Bring proof of library ownership (e.g., the physical library item you
used to make your copy, our library call number for the book,
or a copy of the catalog entry from the online catalog)
- single article from a journal where copyright permission is not granted for digitizing
- Bring the copy or copies (no more than 1 copy per 10 students)
- Bring copyright permission for the material, if this is NOT the first
time reserve use.
- student papers that you want to put on reserve as "models"
for your current classes:
- the copy or copies of the paper(s) with the student's name(s) blacked out - or -
- copyright permission from the student if the student's name remains on the paper
Media
- Please take note of the streaming video options through BlackBoard. Those materials are available without further copyright requirements. You may search individual titles in the online catalog or at the film web site.
- for other streaming video needs, contact Glenn Brewster at Materials and Technology Services (5-4872), making sure that you can prove copyright compliance for the item you want streamed
- tell Library Reserves the media library-owned item you want on reserve
(tape, VHS, DVD, etc.)
- bring your own media item to the Reserve Desk to be placed on reserve.
Please note:
- Commercially-produced, purchased items may first require
copyright clearance
- Off-air tapes are only valid to show for 10 days after taping
